Washington Irving High School was founded in 1902 and is situated in the Gramercy Park district of New York City, in the heart of the lower east side. |
The
school's (approximately) 2,500 students come from a variety of cultural and
ethnic backgrounds, and most commute to the school from other parts of the city. Over the past few years, the school has implemented a "smaller is better" policy, creating Houses (mini-schools) of no more than 400 students. This enables students to benefit from a smaller school environment and still enjoy the resources of a large school. Each House has a theme which allows students to see practical applications to their academic subjects. The main objective of the House system is to promote scholarship in a more personalised environment. The school has its own web site. |
