School Washington Irving High School was founded in 1902 and is situated in the Gramercy Park district of New York City, in the heart of the lower east side. Washington Irving map

The school's (approximately) 2,500 students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and most commute to the school from other parts of the city.

Over the past few years, the school has implemented a "smaller is better" policy, creating Houses (mini-schools) of no more than 400 students. This enables students to benefit from a smaller school environment and still enjoy the resources of a large school.

Each House has a theme which allows students to see practical applications to their academic subjects. The main objective of the House system is to promote scholarship in a more personalised environment.

The school has its own web site.
